The dishes produced by Fresh Gourmet are based on the guidelines of the Mediterranean and Cretan diet. Relying on traditional recipes and simple Mediterranean ingredients, such as fruit, vegetables, potatoes, grains, pulses, cheese, yoghurt, olive oil, fish, poultry and pork, Fresh Gourmet prepares food which apart from its excellent flavour, helps give health and long life!

Fresh Gourmet’s choice to base its menu on the Mediterranean diet did not come about by chance, as studies carried out both in Greece and abroad over the last decades have shown the diet in question is the healthiest for people today. Fresh Gourmet even went so far as to find the authentic recipes prepared for centuries by the people of the Mediterranean, and to use them in the production of their products, avoiding interventions that might have spoilt the Mediterranean character of the dishes.

The diet adopted by Fresh Gourmet to create its dishes, was called Mediterranean as we see its elements among the peoples who live and breathe in the area around the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean Diet is characterized by a low consumption of fat and particularly saturated fatty acids, and by a high consumption of carbohydrates which are mainly found in cereals and their products, in fruit, vegetables, milk and dairy products. The Mediterranean Diet is also rich in vitamins, while the main form of fat used is olive oil.

The most typical example of the Mediterranean Diet today is the Cretan diet, which has helped the residents of the island live a long and healthy life. Indeed the residents of Crete have the lowest death rate from cardiovascular diseases on a world scale, which according to scientists is due to the diet they follow.

The Cretan diet though is not something new, but is a story lost in the depths of time. The Cretan diet began long ago, even before the Neolithic Age. Finds from archaeological excavations have shown that the ancient Cretans, the Minoans, consumed almost the same products eaten by the Cretans today.

Cretan dietary customs were and continue to be orientated towards whatever is produced by the earth: herbs, wild greens, vegetables, pulses, fruit, as well as the products of stock-raising: cheese products and meat, always cooked in olive oil which is counted amongst the 10 most beneficial foods for man.

The Cretans make their sweets with natural sweeteners such as honey and grape-juice syrup, whilst wine is an inseparable part of every meal. The Cretans also in the past consumed limited amounts of meat, a fact which they exploited to the full in order to combine a wide range of ingredients, resulting in innumerable Cretan recipes for both savoury and sweet dishes.

Following therefore the example of the Cretans, Fresh Gourmet today brings to our table the healthiest and purest foods, and gives its clients the opportunity to taste a little of the Minoan magic and to enjoy good health and long life…
